From Strangers to Family: Six Years of #runDopey

The #runDopey group began simply – two sisters seeking accountability and positivity while training for their first Dopey Challenge. What started as a small support system has blossomed into a 6,000-member strong community that extends far beyond just the Dopey Challenge. As group moderator Christine shared, many members joined without ever having run a marathon before, seeking guidance and encouragement for tackling the intimidating 48.6-mile challenge.
What sets#runDopey apart is their unwavering commitment to inclusivity. Regardless of pace, experience level, or chosen race distance, everyone is welcomed with open arms. The group evolved organically during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a vital connection for isolated runners yearning for community. When races resumed, what had been virtual friendships blossomed into real-life connections, creating what Leslie describes as “more of a family reunion than a race weekend.”
Perhaps the most visible hallmark of the #runDopey crew is their elaborate costumes, which have become legendary in runDisney circles. From their Soaring flight attendants (which earned them a feature on PhotoPass social media) to their comprehensive Cinderella-themed group costume, their creative approach to race day attire has become a defining element of their community. The planning process typically spans months, involving collaborative brainstorming, extensive research, and plenty of trial and error to create memorable race-day ensembles.
Beyond costumes, the group has established numerous race weekend traditions that strengthen their bonds. Pre-race meetups at the expo and bleachers, identifying each other through green bows on left shoes or branded merchandise, and post-race dance parties to Fireball have all become signature elements of their race experience. These touchpoints create opportunities for connection, allowing members to transform what could be a solitary activity into a shared celebration.
The practical wisdom shared by the #runDopey crew resonates for all runners, especially those embarking on their first training cycle. Their key advice emphasized staying present in the moment rather than getting overwhelmed by the entirety of the training schedule, understanding that training progress isn’t linear, and believing in your own strength even when doubt creeps in. As Idalis powerfully stated, “You are stronger than you think.
