Ep 204 Race Day Volunteers: The Heartbeat of Race Day
Every finish line moment you’ve celebrated was possible because someone showed up before dawn. They prepared water stations or cheered when you needed it most. In this heartfelt episode, we pull back the curtain on race volunteering. We share insights from experienced volunteers. They have supported events from local 5Ks to the Boston Marathon.

The episode begins with an introduction from Michelle and Jessica from Erie PA. If you’d like to introduce an upcoming episode, please reach out to us on our social media. You can also email us, or leave us a message on our hot-line (727-266-2344).
Race Volunteers High Fives & Hydration

Our volunteers —Ileana, Steve, Kay, and Mike—share what motivates them to give their time. They reveal the behind-the-scenes work few runners see. They also talk about the special connections formed with participants during races. Volunteers set up thousands of water cups hours before runners arrive. They find creative ways to encourage struggling participants. These stories will transform how you see the smiling faces along your race route.
“I want any runner that interacts with me to know that I’m there to help them,” explains Steve. “I will support them in any way I can.” This captures the generous spirit that defines the volunteer experience. Kay reminds us that volunteers are often the first to arrive. They are the last to leave. They ask nothing in return but the joy of supporting others’ achievements.
The panel shared fascinating insights about the logistics of race support. Mike’s experience at the Boston Marathon revealed the incredible preparation for setting up water stations. Volunteers arrived at 8 AM for runners who wouldn’t pass until 11:30. They meticulously stacked thousands of cups. Later, they raked up discarded cups from the course. Meanwhile, Ileana described the festive atmosphere at an ultra marathon. The race director’s only rule was “there is no rule.” This created a 24-hour party to support runners and their families through a grueling 100K.
We’re also joined by Mark Lane-Hulbert. He shares his profound experience guiding a blind runner at the Boston Marathon. Mark also discusses his upcoming handbook on running therapy. His work with Achilles International highlights another dimension of the running community’s supportive nature.
