Inside the 501st Legion: The Bad Guys Doing Good at runDisney

What happens when the Empire’s finest decide to support runners instead of hunting Rebels? This week we’re joined by members of the 501st Legion, a global organization of Star Wars cosplayers who bring movie-quality villain costumes to the sidelines of Disney races. Mai, Mariannie, and Tony joined the podcast to discuss their experiences cheering for runners at Disney races while dressed in impeccably accurate Star Wars villain costumes and share heartwarming stories about using their passion to support charities and bring smiles to children in hospitals.

The 501st Legion, with nearly 16,000 members worldwide, is entirely volunteer-based and focuses heavily on charity work. Members create movie-accurate costumes of Star Wars villains, following extremely detailed specifications to ensure authenticity. While the costumes are impressive, the most rewarding aspect for members is the opportunity to support various causes, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Red Cross, and hospital visits for children.

Tony who dresses as a Shadow Scout and and Mariannie who dresses as a Shadowtrooper, shared that putting on the armor and the feeling of bringing joy to others, particularly children in hospitals, makes the extensive effort worthwhile.

The episode also explored the fascinating connection between the 501st Legion and the Star Wars franchise itself. The group was eventually recognized by George Lucas and incorporated into official Star Wars canon, appearing as the 501st Clone Troopers in various Star Wars media. Some members have even appeared as extras in The Mandalorian, showcasing how their dedication to costume accuracy has earned them recognition from Lucasfilm.
