Ep 263 Tangents, Training & Race Weekend Buzz

A marathon on a treadmill sounds like a joke until the weather turns, the schedule collapses, and you still need the miles. We talk through the reality of late-cycle training as Wine & Dine gets closer, including how we handle pacing when humidity spikes, why long runs should follow a speed limit instead of a “prove it” pace, and what it looks like to protect sleep while still getting the work done

Tangents, Training & Race Weekend Buzz

One of the standout marathon training stories is the mental challenge of an indoor long run when storms derail outdoor plans. Greg shares how he tackled 26 miles on a treadmill by splitting it into two half marathons, stepping off regularly, swapping socks, changing media, and keeping the brain busy when scenery never changes. The treadmill vs outdoor running debate gets real, including why a slight incline can better mimic road resistance and why it’s smart to take breaks for fueling and body resets. For anyone preparing for New York City Marathon or arunDisney marathon, it’s a masterclass in problem-solving: protect your feet, practice fueling, and build confidence that you can keep moving even when conditions are not ideal.

Safety becomes a central theme as early mornings and darker evenings return. We revisit runner safety basics that matter for every runner, especially anyone who trains solo: tell someone where you’re going, share live tracking when possible, stay alert at driveways and intersections, and assume drivers do not see you until you make eye contact. We also discuss visibility tools like reflective vests and safety tech such as Noonlight, Garmin LiveTrack, and Road ID style services, plus carry options like GoGuarded. These safety tips are not abstract, they are the habits that help you get to the start line healthy, whether you’re training for a 5K, a half marathon, or a full marathon.

We even look ahead to community moments like the NYC Marathon weekend gathering and the podcast’s anniversary plans, reminding you that the best training plan is stronger when it includes support, shared knowledge, and a place to belong.

This week’s spotlight shines on Heidi, who had an incredible weekend at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, October 3rd and 4th. She originally planned to treat the Saturday 5K and Sunday Half Marathon as catered training runs for her upcoming Dopey Challenge, but the race‑day magic had other plans!

Heidi felt strong, the crowd energy was electric, and she ended up crushing it snagging a 26:21 PR in the 5K, good for 2nd out of 109 in her age group! Then on Sunday, she powered through the half marathon with confidence, finishing in 2:02:59, a 10‑minute course PR and a huge boost for her Dopey training.

Milwaukee’s iconic Hoan Bridge served as the centerpiece of both races a tough climb but worth every step for those stunning views and perfect weather. With 6,000 runners in the half and full marathons, the wall of people climbing toward the bridge felt like Main Street at Magic Kingdom pure magic.
