Dean Karnazes

We are glad to interview the legendary ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes, covering his Greece running tour honoring Jeff Galloway, the deeper history of Marathon, and how learning the origin story can change what the marathon distance means. Dean shares his unconventional return to running at age 30, plus stories that stretch the imagination: running across America, treadmill record attempts, the extreme heat of Badwater where asphalt can melt shoes, and the South Pole marathon where cold, wind, and whiteout conditions turn a “run” into crawling. The big takeaway is not that you need superhuman talent, but that mindset, identity, and persistence matter more than most people admit.
Dean’s most useful advice for everyday runners is simple and repeatable: you do not have to go fast, you just have to go. He frames suffering as part of the deal, encouraging runners to embrace the “magic and misery” of training and racing because challenge is where growth happens. He also gives specific summer training and recovery tips: treat heat as a training tool, cover up with UV-protective gear, listen to your body rather than forcing a schedule, and recover with active movement, hydration, ice baths, and quality protein.

This week on Spotlight , we’re spotlighting Yvette, who brought all the Philly pride to her run through the iconic Philly 10K.
Yvette’s miles took her past Geno’s and Pat’s the legendary cheesesteak rivals where the energy feels uniquely South Philly. From there, she headed straight into the Italian Market, the same stretch of street where Rocky weaved through produce stands during his training montage.
Next up for Yvette is the Bird IN Hand Half Marathon.
We also spotlight Arno Tessers’ bold mission to run all nine World Marathon Majors in a single year while filming a documentary. If you’re looking for motivation with real grit—and Run Disney planning you can actually put to work—this episode sends you off with exactly that.
